SHUMAI FAQ

How do I eat shumai?

Shumai are a classic dim sum favourite—perfect as a snack, side dish, or part of a larger meal. Simply steam, pan-fry, or air fry from frozen, and enjoy them hot. They’re delicious on their own or paired with your favourite dipping sauce.

Do I need a dipping sauce?

Our Shanghai Shumai Sticky Rice Dumplings are packed with savoury pork, sticky rice, and umami-rich seasoning, so they’re full of flavour on their own. But if you love a little extra zing, try dipping them in soy sauce, chilli oil, or black vinegar.

What’s the difference between shumai and dumplings?

Shumai are open-faced dumplings with a soft, delicate wrapper and a juicy filling that’s visible on top. Traditional dumplings are fully enclosed in dough and often boiled, steamed, or pan-fried. Both are staples of Chinese cuisine—but shumai bring a unique texture and presentation to the table.

Can I cook shumai without a steamer?

Absolutely! While steaming is traditional, you can also pan-fry or air fry them for a crispier base. Just follow our cooking instructions and make sure they’re heated through before serving.
